Crystal Palace’s hopes of securing a second all-London victory in four days were ended by Tottenham, who recorded a 2-0 win after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early red card left the Eagles playing with 10 men for most of the contest.
Palace had started positively following Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Fulham, with Daichi Kamada forcing a save from AntonÃn Kinský with an effort from outside the area. However, the match changed soon afterwards when Mateta’s challenge on Micky van de Ven made contact with the Tottenham defender’s Achilles. Following a pitch-side review, referee Michael Oliver dismissed the Palace forward.
Tottenham eventually made their numerical advantage count when Archie Gray headed home from a deep corner at the far post. Dean Henderson was then required to make several important saves, including a sharp stop to deny Dominic Solanke, while Axel Disasi also made key defensive interventions as Palace reached half-time one goal behind.
Henderson kept Palace in the contest after the interval, saving from Solanke and later making another strong stop to prevent Conor Gallagher from adding to the hosts’ advantage. Palace also had an opportunity to respond when Dwight McNeil saw a close-range effort blocked after Eddie Nketiah and Anan Khalaili had been introduced.
Tottenham ultimately secured the points with a second goal from a back-post header, which Henderson initially kept out before the rebound was forced over the line. Palace will now look to recover in Europe against Hoffenheim on Thursday, before Liverpool visit Selhurst Park next Sunday.
