Crystal Palace suffered a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday night after Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a red card in the opening stages of the Premier League match.

Mateta was initially booked by referee Michael Oliver following a lunging challenge in which he caught Micky van de Ven's heel with his studs. However, VAR official Jarred Gillett advised Oliver to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, and the yellow card was subsequently upgraded to a sending-off after 11 minutes.

Tottenham made their numerical advantage count in the 25th minute. Archie Gray was left unmarked and headed home from a Mohammed Kudus corner, leaving Palace facing a difficult task with ten men.

Palace continued to resist as Tottenham applied pressure, but the hosts added a second goal in the 73rd minute. Mateus Fernandes delivered a deep cross from the left, with Jan Paul van Hecke eventually heading the ball over the line after his first effort had been pushed onto the crossbar by Dean Henderson.

There was a positive moment for Tottenham late on when Luca Williams-Barnett came off the bench to make his Premier League debut. The 18-year-old appeared to have created an opportunity for Kudus, although the chance was missed.

Roberto De Zerbi is speaking to the media after the match, with questions expected to include Mateta's dismissal, van Hecke's goal and Williams-Barnett's first Premier League appearance.
