Crystal Palace were beaten by Tottenham on Saturday evening after an early red card left them facing a difficult challenge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Palace had created the only opportunity of the opening ten minutes and appeared to be settling into the contest before Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off while attempting to reach the ball. Archie Gray then headed Tottenham in front in the 25th minute, and Palace were unable to recover.
Tyrick Mitchell admitted the dismissal was frustrating, particularly as it came during the early stages of the game. Speaking to Sky Sports, the defender said Palace’s response had been to remain compact, avoid conceding again and look for opportunities on the counter-attack.
That plan did not produce a way back into the match, although Mitchell pointed to the capabilities of Palace’s back five and the wider team. He acknowledged that the result made it difficult to focus on the positives, but insisted the squad must respond quickly.
Palace now face Hoffenheim and Liverpool in two major fixtures this week. Mitchell’s message ahead of those matches was for the team to stay together, retain confidence in what it can achieve and aim to bounce back with a win in the next game.
