Crystal Palace suffered a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early dismissal left the Eagles facing most of the match with 10 men.
Palace had made a promising start, with Daichi Kamada forcing a save from AntonÃn Kinský with a shot from outside the area. However, their task became considerably harder when Mateta was shown a red card following a pitch-side review for a challenge on Micky van de Ven.
Tottenham eventually made their advantage count before half-time. Mohammed Kudus’ corner reached Archie Gray at the far post, allowing the defender to head the hosts in front. Dean Henderson was then called upon to keep Palace within touching distance, making saves as Spurs controlled possession.
The Palace captain produced another important stop soon after the interval to deny Dominic Solanke, while a deflection from Mateus Fernandes’ effort also went narrowly wide. Palace introduced Eddie Nketiah and Anan Khalaili before the hour, and Dwight McNeil came close when a loose ball dropped to him in the penalty area, but his effort was blocked.
Tottenham sealed the result when Fernandes delivered towards the back post. Henderson initially kept out the resulting header, but the ball was forced over the line on the rebound. The goalkeeper later saved from former Palace player Conor Gallagher as the hosts completed the victory.
Palace will look to respond in Europe against Hoffenheim on Thursday before Liverpool visit Selhurst Park next Sunday.
