Pierre Sage said Crystal Palace’s supporters showed their backing during the 1-0 Carabao Cup win at Fulham, including by singing the manager’s name during the match.
The Palace boss felt the bond between the team and its fans grows stronger when the players show commitment on the pitch. While he acknowledged that Fulham controlled much of the game, Sage was pleased with the way his side defended and protected the details that had been worked on.
Sage accepted that the performance was not the ideal route to victory, but stressed that winning in that manner can still be valuable. He also said the result was not the only measure of the evening, pointing to the team’s character and the style of play it was able to produce under pressure.
The manager’s gesture towards the supporters after the final whistle also drew attention. Sage explained that the kiss he blew was intended for his wife, adding that although he appreciates Palace fans, his love for his wife comes first.
There was particular satisfaction for Cheick Doucoure, who made his first start in 662 days. Sage highlighted the midfielder’s long wait and the effort involved in returning to the pitch, saying the most important thing for both Doucoure and his team-mates was seeing him happy to be playing football again.
