Crystal Palace defeated Fulham 1-0 in the Carabao Cup, with Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa admitting that his side were punished by the visitors after failing to convert their chances.
Arbeloa described the result as a difficult evening for Fulham, who had been determined to progress in the competition. He also highlighted the importance of the London derby for the club and its supporters.
According to the Fulham boss, Palace used a similar approach to the one that had brought them success against Fulham some weeks earlier. He said they defended effectively, waited for a mistake and made the most of the limited opportunity they created on this occasion.
Arbeloa felt Fulham had three or four clear chances but were left empty-handed because they could not finish them. He said Palace, by contrast, had only one opportunity and took it.
The Fulham manager added that his team must move the ball faster when facing a deep defensive block. He also called for greater creativity in wide areas and said Fulham need to improve their understanding of how to attack Crystal Palace.
