Crystal Palace supporters have been debating whether Pierre Sage should move away from his current 3-4-3 setup to reduce the risk of becoming involved in a relegation battle this season. The discussion followed Ollie Thomas’ suggestion that a tactical change may be necessary.
Lewis called for Palace to switch to a 4-3-3, arguing that the existing three-man defence has not worked. Paul shared that view, saying the Eagles have appeared vulnerable for an extended period and should make the change before the situation becomes more serious.
Dominic also supported a new system, but stressed that Palace must improve their midfield protection. He felt the current approach can leave too many opponents running through the middle, with Palace sometimes ending up with five attacking players facing only three defenders. He also suggested revisiting the system used by the team at Leeds.
Jason wanted both a formation change and stronger leadership. His preferred solution was a back four with an additional holding midfielder positioned in front of the defence. He also questioned whether Adam Wharton currently provides the on-field leadership Palace need, while acknowledging the midfielder’s ability.
Not every supporter blamed the formation itself. Stephen argued that the squad’s quality and defensive options were bigger issues, saying Palace’s best two defenders had departed and had been replaced by players he viewed unfavourably. He also criticised the team’s attempts to press high when doing so leaves the defence exposed, while saying Sage has yet to settle on a consistent defensive unit.
Colin said the manager must be ready to adapt tactically depending on the circumstances. He cited the away match against an in-form Brighton side as an example, adding that although he appreciates Sage’s expansive approach, he does not believe it can be used in every game.
