Jean-Philippe Mateta marked his first Crystal Palace start since the opening day of the season with a goal, but the forward was left disappointed after the Eagles were held to a draw by Beşiktaş in Istanbul.

The Frenchman had not scored since the UEFA Conference League Final. He also saw an earlier effort ruled out by VAR before Beşiktaş took the lead shortly before half-time, despite Palace having started the match strongly.

After Yéremy Pino equalised from close range, Mateta capitalised on a loose backpass and fired Palace into the lead. The goal appeared to have put Oliver Glasner's side on course for an impressive victory against opponents who had won their previous eight home matches in all competitions.

However, Junior Olaitan produced a late finish to earn Beşiktaş a share of the points. Mateta believed Palace had done enough to claim victory, while acknowledging that allowing their hosts opportunities ultimately proved costly.

The striker also praised the Palace supporters, who have followed the team on three consecutive away trips. The Eagles will return to Selhurst Park this weekend for a fixture against Newcastle, with Mateta expecting another important occasion and Palace aiming to build on the positive aspects of their performance in Turkey.
