Crystal Palace Under-21s travel to Newport County on Tuesday for an EFL Trophy shoot-out that could decide who advances from Group E.

Newport will be strengthened by the return of forward Shaquille Gwengwe, who has completed a three-match suspension. The 25-year-old was banned following an off-the-ball incident that went unseen by the officials during the draw with York City, with Newport manager Hayden Mullins having considered the punishment severe.

Mullins must also assess the workloads of left-back Tom Davies and striker Kion Etete as they continue their respective returns from injury. Newport face Walsall in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but their manager has made clear that Tuesday’s match remains important as his side pursue progress in every competition.

Newport will secure a place in the knockout stages by avoiding defeat against the young Eagles. A draw would allow Palace to draw level on points if they win the accompanying penalty shoot-out, although Newport would still hold the advantage on goal difference.

Plymouth currently lead Group E and complete their campaign at home to already eliminated Swindon on Tuesday, 10 November.
