Crystal Palace Under-21s will face a Newport County side strengthened by the return of forward Shaquille Gwengwe for Tuesday’s EFL Trophy fixture.

Gwengwe is available again after completing a three-match suspension for an off-the-ball incident that was not spotted by officials during Newport’s draw with York City. Newport manager Hayden Mullins considered the punishment severe, but can now decide whether to bring the 25-year-old back into his plans.

The Welsh club may also have to manage the minutes of left-back Tom Davies and striker Kion Etete, who are both continuing their returns from injury. However, Mullins has made clear that Newport remain determined to progress in the competition despite hosting Walsall in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The result could have a direct bearing on Palace’s chances of reaching the knockout stages. Newport will qualify by avoiding defeat against the Eagles, while a draw would allow Palace to draw level on points if they win the resulting penalty shootout. County would nevertheless retain the advantage of a superior goal difference.

Plymouth currently lead Group E and conclude their campaign at home to Swindon, who have already been eliminated, on Tuesday, 10 November.
