Crystal Palace’s Premier League trip to Brighton took a disastrous turn inside the opening minutes, with the hosts scoring twice in quick succession.
The second goal came from Diego Gomez, who produced one of the afternoon’s most extraordinary moments. After winning possession around the centre circle, the Brighton midfielder turned and attempted an audacious lob from roughly 50 metres.
Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez was positioned too far forward to recover, allowing Gomez’s effort to sail over him and into the net. The strike immediately stood out as an early contender for one of the best goals of the season.
The match was particularly important for Palace as they looked to respond after their 3-2 defeat away to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday. Instead, the London side found themselves facing a two-goal deficit within only a few minutes at Brighton.
