Crystal Palace were unable to turn a promising start into points as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 Premier League victory at Selhurst Park. The result leaves Newcastle seventh in the table and ends their run of consecutive league defeats against Coventry City and Aston Villa.
Palace threatened almost immediately when Adam Wharton’s free-kick delivery caused confusion in the Newcastle penalty area. Jean-Philippe Mateta made two attempts to force the ball home, but goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek reacted sharply on both occasions.
The hosts continued to carry the greater attacking threat during the opening stages, recording eight shots in the first 26 minutes. Mateta, Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil were unable to seriously test Hornicek, while a late first-half cross from Yeremy Pino narrowly missed Axel Disasi as he arrived in the box.
Newcastle changed the momentum after the interval and moved ahead two minutes into the second half. Jacob Murphy sent a precise cross into the area, allowing William Osula to finish first time and give the visitors the lead. Newcastle briefly appeared to have a second when Joe Willock scored after running onto Joelinton’s pass, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside.
The Magpies eventually doubled their advantage through another well-worked move. Nico Gonzalez held up possession before finding Amar Dedic, who laid the ball into Harvey Barnes’ path. Barnes finished emphatically into the left corner, leaving Palace with a difficult task.
Palace continued to search for a response, with Wharton curling an effort just beyond the hour mark before Dario Osorio forced Hornicek into a full-stretch save with a swerving long-range strike. The defeat means Palace have now conceded 50 Premier League goals in 2026, at least four more than any other team in the competition. Despite registering 17 shots and an expected-goals figure of 1.69, only four of Palace’s efforts were on target.
