Crystal Palace were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United at Selhurst Park after failing to turn a promising first-half performance into goals. The result leaves Newcastle seventh in the Premier League and increases the pressure on Palace boss Pierre Sage.

Palace threatened almost immediately when Adam Wharton's free-kick caused confusion in the Newcastle penalty area. Jean-Philippe Mateta had two attempts to force the ball home, but goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek reacted sharply to keep the visitors level.

The hosts continued to attack in front of an energetic home crowd, recording eight shots during the opening 26 minutes — their highest first-half total in a Premier League match this season. Mateta, Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil all had opportunities, although none managed to properly test Hornicek. Palace also went close before the interval when a cross from Yeremy Pino narrowly missed Axel Disasi.

Newcastle emerged with greater purpose after the break and took the lead in the 47th minute. Jacob Murphy delivered an accurate cross and William Osula finished first time to put the visitors ahead. Newcastle briefly appeared to double their advantage through Joe Willock, but the effort was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Palace could not prevent Newcastle from finding a second goal, with Nico Gonzalez holding the ball up before supplying Amar Dedic. Dedic then picked out Harvey Barnes, who finished emphatically into the bottom-left corner. Wharton later tested Hornicek with a curling effort, while Dario Osorio forced another full-stretch save with a long-range strike, but Palace could not find a way back into the contest.

The defeat came despite Palace registering 17 shots and an expected-goals figure of 1.69, although only four efforts were on target. The Eagles have now conceded 50 Premier League goals in 2026, at least four more than any other team in the competition, adding to the scrutiny surrounding Sage.
