The atmosphere in Crystal Palace's away end became toxic after the Eagles suffered a 5-0 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.
According to the Daily Mail, Palace supporters furious at the derby humiliation directed a torrent of insults at head coach Pierre Sage. Every Palace player was booed at the final whistle apart from Jefferson Lerma.
Sage accepted responsibility for the team's performance during his post-match press conference. The former Lyon and Lens coach said: “I have a lot of work to do. I did not create the conditions for the players to start well. The first work to be done is on myself.”
Tensions also rose between the players and the travelling supporters. Chris Richards reportedly left angrily without going over to acknowledge the away end, before Jørgen Strand Larsen followed him, spoke to him sternly and brought him back towards the fans.
Assistant coach Paddy McCarthy remained at the away end for an extended period in an attempt to calm the situation, receiving a more favourable reception. The defeat was Palace's heaviest against Brighton since 1956, underlining the difficult mood now surrounding Sage and his team.
