Chris Richards has welcomed the steady growth of Crystal Palace’s support in the United States, saying the club’s success is helping the Eagles reach an increasingly global audience.
The defender was speaking after a productive international window with the USA. Richards scored against Chile, helped his country record two clean sheets and captained the side in their meeting with Canada, as the United States won all four of their matches against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada.
The international period also saw 19-year-old Palace teammate Zavier Gozo make his senior debut for the USA. Richards said having another American at Selhurst Park had made the experience particularly enjoyable, pointing to the value of sharing experiences while continuing to develop at club level.
Richards has noticed that connection with Palace growing among supporters in America. He has received messages from people saying that following him had encouraged them and their partners to become Palace fans, while US shirts have become more visible in the stands. He believes the increasing respect for American players in the Premier League has contributed to that development.
Gozo now lives close to Richards, and the Palace defender also spoke warmly about the youngster away from football, revealing that his daughter Luna is very fond of him. More importantly, Richards has been impressed by Gozo’s attitude, particularly his desire to learn and improve in every training session.
With Premier League Mornings Live returning to Denver this weekend, Palace’s growing Stateside profile will be in focus again. Richards’ experiences with the USA and his relationship with Gozo underline the club’s increasing connection with American supporters and players.
