Crystal Palace reached the quarterfinals of the competition for a third consecutive season after Eddie Nketiah’s decisive volley earned a 1-0 victory over Fulham. The result also gave Pierre Sage some welcome relief, although Saturday’s meeting with Tottenham is expected to carry greater significance for the manager’s future.

Sage made 10 changes following Palace’s Europa League trip to Istanbul and their subsequent defeat by Newcastle, with Chris Richards the only player retained from the previous starting XI. Captain Dean Henderson also returned in goal after a month out, making a crucial injury-time save from Gonzalo García to preserve Palace’s lead.

Fulham began strongly and twice threatened inside the opening minute, with Kenny Tete heading wide before Henderson blocked Antonee Robinson’s effort at the far post. Palace struggled to build momentum early on, recording only 22% possession and failing to touch the ball in Fulham’s penalty area during the first half-hour. Their efficiency in front of goal, however, proved decisive.

Óscar Mingueza created the opening with an excellent delivery from the right, allowing Nketiah to meet the cross with a superb volley. Sander Berge missed a chance to level before half-time, while Palace improved after the interval. Evann Guessand tested Benjamin Lecomte, and Jefferson Lerma cleared Alex Iwobi’s header off the line during a period of Fulham pressure.

Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil both had opportunities to settle the tie late on, with Kamada’s effort narrowly missing the post. Fulham’s frustration was clear at the final whistle, while Palace supporters celebrated the possibility of another Wembley run. The victory was Palace’s fifth over Fulham at this ground in 18 months, extending the hosts’ wait for a home win in the fixture that began in January 2005.

Palace are also facing the prospect of a supporter protest before their next home match against Liverpool, with concerns raised over ticket prices and the club’s matchday strategy. For now, though, the cup progress provides Sage with breathing space ahead of the Tottenham test.
