Jean-Philippe Mateta made his first start since the opening day a memorable one by scoring, but Crystal Palace were held to a 2-2 Europa League draw by Besiktas in Istanbul.
Palace had been looking for a response after their 5-0 defeat at Brighton and were the stronger side before Wilfred Ndidi put Besiktas ahead in first-half stoppage time. Mateta had earlier found the net, but the goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee.
Yéremy Pino levelled six minutes after the interval before Mateta restored Palace’s advantage four minutes later, firing them into the lead for the first time. The forward’s return to the starting line-up therefore brought an immediate goal, although Palace could not protect their advantage.
Junior Olaitan equalised in the 73rd minute. Besiktas were reduced to 10 men four minutes later when Umit Akdag was dismissed for a clumsy challenge on Jørgen Strand Larsen, who was subsequently forced off, but Palace could not find a winner against the depleted hosts.
