Crystal Palace’s ability to make the most of a limited opening proved decisive as they defeated Fulham 1-0 in the Carabao Cup, according to Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa.

Arbeloa felt Palace adopted a patient approach similar to the one that had worked against Fulham previously. He said the visitors focused on waiting for an error, then capitalised when their opportunity arrived.

The Fulham boss acknowledged that his side created three or four clear chances but failed to convert any of them. Palace, by contrast, had only one opportunity by Arbeloa’s assessment and still found the decisive goal.

He also praised Palace’s defensive organisation, describing them as effective while protecting their advantage. The result meant Fulham missed out on progressing in a significant London derby for the club and its supporters.

Arbeloa said Fulham must improve their attacking play against Palace’s deep defensive structure. His main areas for improvement were moving the ball more quickly and creating greater danger in wide positions, while developing a clearer understanding of how to break down a team set up in that way.
