Crystal Palace youngster Rio Cardines continued his outstanding run of form for Bristol City by providing another assist in their 1-0 home victory over Watford.
The Trinidad and Tobago international delivered an inswinging cross from the left wing for Dom Ballard to convert, taking his tally to six assists in his last seven league appearances. The contribution underlined Cardines’ influence from either side of the pitch, despite his usual position being right-back.
The 20-year-old has instead operated mainly on the left of Bristol City’s defence this season and is now being recognised as one of Europe’s leading assist-makers. His performances have also earned praise from manager Michael Skubala.
“Rio Cardines is still learning the game tactically, but his record of assists this season is exceptional,” Skubala said. “We knew we were signing a very talented young player, but his dead ball striking is so impressive.”
Cardines is now set to join up with Trinidad & Tobago during the extended international break. Skubala said the club’s priority was to look after the young defender and hoped he would return safely from international duty.
