A much-loved Italian restaurant in Crystal Palace is preparing to close after more than four decades at the heart of the local community. Lorenzo, the family-run trattoria on Westow Hill, will welcome diners for the final time on November 22.
The restaurant announced the decision on its website, describing the closure as a deeply painful moment for the family. Lorenzo said rising operating costs, financial strain and the wider difficulties facing independent hospitality businesses had made continuing increasingly challenging.
Since opening in 1985, the three-storey restaurant has hosted generations of local families and friends. Its team said it had been part of birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other celebrations, while many former young diners later returned with families of their own.
Founder Lorenzo Nargi will celebrate his 88th birthday in November. After dedicating much of his life to the restaurant, his family said the closure would also allow him to enjoy a slower pace of life. They added that they were proud of what Lorenzo had become and hoped to see as many familiar customers as possible before the doors close.
The announcement has prompted an emotional response from loyal Palace diners, who have shared memories of visits stretching back decades. Some locals have also linked the closure to wider concerns about change around The Triangle, including the pressure they believe independent businesses face as chain restaurants become more prominent along Church Road, Westow Hill and Westow Street.
