Crystal Palace’s League Cup victory at Fulham brought an important boost beyond the result, with Cheick Doucoure making his first appearance since January 2025.

The 26-year-old has endured a difficult period since being named Palace’s player of the year in 2023, during his first season at Selhurst Park. His injury problems have included a ruptured Achilles and a meniscus tear.

Palace fan Ollie Thomas said Doucoure’s return was the standout moment of the Fulham match. While acknowledging that the midfielder will need time to regain his previous level, Thomas felt he looked comfortable in the team during his comeback.

Thomas believes Doucoure could provide a combination that Palace have lacked in midfield this season. He described Quinten Timber as effective but overly aggressive, while Adam Wharton brings quality on the ball but needs physical support alongside him. Will Hughes, meanwhile, offers a deeper presence.

The assessment is that a fully restored Doucoure could add ball-winning ability, defensive protection and the capacity to progress possession from deep. A partnership with Wharton could therefore give Palace a more balanced midfield option for the remainder of the season, although Doucoure’s return remains at an early stage after such a lengthy absence.
