Ismaïla Sarr is moving closer to his top level, according to Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage, who feels the forward will benefit from building up his match minutes. Sarr made his first start of the season in Wednesday’s defeat in Lyon after previously returning from the bench, and he was replaced during the second half.

Sage suggested the Senegal international could now be ready to play the full match at Brighton on Sunday. He explained that Sarr’s return has been managed in stages, from a substitute appearance to a start, with completing 90 minutes representing the next step. The manager also noted that Sarr had limited training during the summer and should improve as his playing time increases.

Brighton has been a productive opponent for Sarr in recent seasons. He scored Palace’s only goal at the Amex last season, having previously recorded two goals and an assist in a 3-1 victory over the Seagulls.

Sage compared Sarr’s situation with that of Quinten Timber, who improved after his first two games following a similar period away from regular football. The Palace boss believes further minutes can help Sarr rediscover his best performances.

With Dean Henderson unavailable through injury, Adam Wharton has taken on the captain’s responsibilities and is expected to lead Palace again on Sunday. The 22-year-old is approaching his 77th Premier League appearance, and Sage views him as a developing leader who sets a strong example through his performances.

Sage also stressed the importance of maintaining a leadership order within the squad, with different captains able to influence teammates in different ways. Despite Palace’s demanding Thursday-to-Sunday schedule and two away fixtures this week, he remained upbeat about the workload and his commitment to management.
