Crystal Palace Women produced a disciplined defensive display to earn a valuable point against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, securing a goalless draw on their first visit to the ground.
Arsenal controlled much of the match and created several opportunities, but Palace’s defence remained composed throughout. Manager Jo Potter was delighted with the performance, saying the result showed a different side to her team and gave the players every reason to celebrate.
Palace spent long periods without possession and were often forced to defend deep. Potter highlighted the concentration required to withstand that pressure, praising her players for staying alert and supporting one another during Arsenal’s sustained spells of attacking play.
The Palace boss felt her side grew into the contest after the interval. Although Arsenal continued to threaten, Potter believed Palace had earned the clean sheet and deserved the reward of a point after their collective effort.
She also pointed to the atmosphere inside the Emirates as an important test for the players. With thousands of supporters creating a loud setting, Palace could not rely on constant instructions from the touchline and had to communicate among themselves. Potter viewed that as a valuable learning experience for the squad.
The result was particularly significant given Arsenal’s quality in possession and their status as one of Europe’s leading teams. Potter admitted that outsiders may not have expected Palace to claim anything from the fixture, but said her players had backed themselves to rise to the challenge.
Palace Women return to action next Sunday, when Tottenham Hotspur visit Selhurst Park for a 14:00 BST kick-off.
