Crystal Palace Women began life back in the Women’s Super League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton, with summer arrival Lexi Lloyd-Smith providing the decisive moment on her debut.
The new No.7 struck in the 34th minute to settle the opening-day contest in South London. Palace controlled much of the match before Everton applied late pressure, but Potter’s side held firm to claim three points and a clean sheet.
Potter believes the goal was a sign of what Lloyd-Smith can offer. The manager said the forward had consistently impressed during pre-season and during her previous season at Bristol, adding that she has the potential to become one of the league’s leading players if she can maintain that level regularly.
The Palace boss was particularly pleased with the team’s defensive resolve in the closing stages. With eight minutes of added time to negotiate, the players followed their instructions, made important decisions and committed themselves to protecting the advantage.
Potter also described the victory as a proud moment as she began managing in the WSL, a competition she previously played in. However, she stressed that Palace must avoid becoming carried away and immediately turn their attention to the next challenge at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium next Sunday.
Palace’s next home fixture is against Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park on Sunday, 20th September, with tickets still available.
