Pierre Sage’s position at Crystal Palace is under serious pressure after the defeat at Tottenham left the club in the Premier League’s bottom three. The Frenchman, who replaced Oliver Glasner during the summer, has seen results deteriorate despite the team’s efforts to remain competitive.

Palace had hoped to carry momentum from their Carabao Cup victory at Fulham into the match in north London. They made a positive start, but that was damaged by Jean-Philippe Mateta’s wild challenge.

Defensive problems then contributed to Tottenham’s opener. Palace failed to deal with a corner delivered by Mohamed Kudus, allowing Archie Gray to score 12 minutes later.

Sage’s side continued to fight rather than collapse, and the travelling Palace support responded by chanting the manager’s name during the second half. Tottenham eventually took control, with Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson producing several important late saves.

The performance offered some evidence that Sage has not lost the dressing room, but the club’s league position means results remain the decisive issue. He also inherited a difficult task following Glasner’s success, which included the FA Cup and Uefa Conference League, yet Palace’s poor run has left the head coach facing growing questions about how long he can remain in charge.
