Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage says Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah are both in contention for Thursday’s Europa League opener against Lech Poznan at Selhurst Park.
Sarr and Nketiah have trained with the first team this week and are considered fit enough to be involved. Sarr has yet to play under Sage after dealing with a groin issue, while Nketiah has missed Palace’s last two matches because of injury. Sage added that he believes Sarr’s previous problems are now behind him and expects the forward to contribute to what he hopes will be a big season.
Jean-Philippe Mateta and goalkeeper Dean Henderson are not expected to return until after the international break. Henderson will therefore miss Thursday’s match, although Palace confirmed on Wednesday that their captain has signed a new contract running until 2030.
Sage welcomed Henderson’s long-term deal, describing the goalkeeper as an important player and leader within the squad. He also praised the contribution of Palace’s other goalkeepers, saying Henderson’s level is helped by the work of his teammates.
The manager also addressed Jaydee Canvot’s omission from the squad for last weekend’s defeat by Ipswich. Sage said the message surrounding the decision had been made clear during the week. Reports that the board was unhappy with the choice were described by Sage as unofficial, while he said he had spoken with chairman Steve Parish and remained able to explain his decisions to the club.
Palace have studied seven of Lech Poznan’s matches this season, according to Sage. He expects a side that began its campaign early and has continued to develop after suffering defeat in the Champions League qualifiers, warning his players to remain focused and avoid being caught off guard.
