Crystal Palace’s first Premier League fixture arrived on 15 August 1992, as the newly created competition began to reshape English football. Selhurst Park hosted Blackburn Rovers, whose ambitious summer recruitment had drawn attention, including the arrival of Southampton striker Alan Shearer under manager Kenny Dalglish.
Palace striker Mark Bright carried added responsibility following Ian Wright’s departure to Arsenal. He made the perfect start, scoring after 37 minutes with a header at the far post to register Palace’s first-ever Premier League goal. It was also the 113th goal of Bright’s Palace career—and, unexpectedly, his last for the club.
Blackburn levelled through Stuart Ripley, but Palace quickly moved back in front through Gareth Southgate. The defender produced a fine dipping half-volley from outside the penalty area, giving the home side another memorable moment in the historic contest.
The visitors responded again, with substitute Simon Osborn finding the equaliser and securing a point for Palace. The 2-2 draw gave the club an eventful introduction to the new top flight, with Bright later recalling the impact made by Shearer’s goals and the attention surrounding Blackburn’s major signing.
Bright’s Palace story changed soon afterwards when he moved to Sheffield Wednesday. He had spent six years with the club and later described the departure as sudden, coming just after the season had begun. Palace’s opening Premier League match therefore became both the start of a new era for the club and the closing chapter of Bright’s goalscoring career in red and blue.
