Crystal Palace suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, despite producing the better chances during a closely contested first half.

The Eagles named the same starting XI that had drawn 2-2 with Beşiktaş in Istanbul around 60 hours earlier. Adam Wharton’s early free-kick created danger, while Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil also combined during a promising opening spell. Tyrick Mitchell and Yéremy Pino later helped create an opportunity for McNeil, who dragged his effort across goal.

Newcastle changed the game immediately after the restart. Jacob Murphy’s curling delivery found William Osula, who moved across his marker to finish from close range. The visitors briefly thought they had added another when Joe Willock scored, but VAR ruled out the effort.

Palace’s deficit was doubled soon afterwards. Amar Dedić delivered from the right following a Newcastle move around the edge of the box, and Harvey Barnes struck from near the penalty spot to make it 2-0.

Eddie Nketiah and Dario Osorio were introduced shortly before the hour mark as Palace searched for a response. Osorio helped spark a more positive spell, with Wharton forcing Lukáš Horníček into a save before the substitute tested the Newcastle goalkeeper again with a long-range effort.

Osorio bent another attempt over late on, while Nketiah went close with a header from the final touch of the match. Palace could not find a way back, however, and Newcastle held on to take all three points from Selhurst Park.
