Crystal Palace’s heavy 5-0 defeat by Brighton has increased the pressure on manager Pierre Sage, with serious questions now being raised about his position at the club.

Palace fan Ollie Thomas said the result exposed defensive problems that had been evident in earlier matches. In his analysis, he argued that the Brighton loss was the culmination of chances Palace had previously escaped conceding against Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Ipswich and Lyon.

Thomas believes the response should involve changes to Palace’s style, structure and team selection. While he said that did not necessarily mean an immediate change in the dugout, he suggested the club could be postponing an eventual decision over Sage’s future if performances do not improve.

The defensive concerns, according to Thomas, go beyond injuries or the availability of individual players. He argued that even a back line featuring Maxence Lacroix and Marc Guehi could still have allowed a similar number of chances, while describing Palace as statistically the Premier League’s poorest defensive side by a considerable distance.

Axel Disasi’s red card made the problems against Brighton more difficult to manage, but Thomas does not believe the defender should be made the scapegoat. He expects Disasi to be an important part of Palace’s defence this season and feels his return will give Sage more options and help bring greater consistency to the back line.
