Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage has confirmed that Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah are back in team training and could be involved in Thursday’s Europa League opener against Lech Poznan at Selhurst Park, which kicks off at 20:00 BST.
Sarr has yet to play under Sage after dealing with a groin problem, while Nketiah has missed Palace’s last two matches through injury. Sage said both players are now in good condition, with Sarr’s previous issue appearing to be behind him. He added that the forward wants to enjoy a strong season with Palace.
Jean-Philippe Mateta and goalkeeper Dean Henderson are not expected to return until after the international break. Henderson will therefore miss the Lech fixture, although he agreed a new Palace contract running until 2030 on Wednesday. Sage described the extension as positive news and stressed the captain’s importance both as a goalkeeper and as a leader within the dressing room.
Sage also addressed Jaydee Canvot’s omission from the squad for last weekend’s defeat by Ipswich. He said the situation had been clearly communicated during the week. Reports that the Palace board were unhappy with the decision were described by Sage as unofficial, while he said he had spoken to chairman Steve Parish and that there was no problem. The manager added that he is prepared to explain the reasoning behind his decisions, whether they are viewed positively or negatively.
Palace have studied seven of Lech Poznan’s matches this season, according to Sage. He noted that the Polish side began their campaign early and had to recover from a loss in the Champions League qualifiers. Sage expects a team that is improving from game to game and has warned Palace to remain focused to avoid being caught out.
