Crystal Palace’s upcoming Carabao Cup fourth-round visit to Fulham offers the Eagles another chance to build momentum in the competition. However, matching one of the club’s most emphatic League Cup performances would be a formidable task.
In 1990, Southend United were on the receiving end of an extraordinary 8-0 defeat as Palace began their route towards Wembley just months after reaching the FA Cup final. Nigel Martyn enjoyed a quiet evening in goal, protected by John Humphrey, Eric Young, Andy Thorn and Richard Shaw.
Alan Pardew, Geoff Thomas, Phil Barber and Eddie McGoldrick controlled the midfield, while the decisive contributions came from the forward line. Ian Wright and Mark Bright proved impossible for Southend to contain, with Bright opening the scoring after only two minutes and Wright adding a second before the interval.
Glyn Hodges came off the bench to make it 3-0 soon after half-time, and the match then moved beyond Southend’s reach. Palace struck four times in an 11-minute spell as their opponents tired before adding an eighth goal in the closing moments.
Wright and Bright each completed a hat-trick in the rout, sending the Eagles into the third round. The result remains among Palace’s biggest victories, surpassed only by the club’s 9-0 success against Barrow in 1959.
Palace will now face stronger opposition at Fulham in the next round. A repeat featuring hat-tricks from Yéremy Pino and Jørgen Strand Larsen may be an ambitious hope, but the 1990 demolition of Southend remains a reminder of what the Eagles can produce in this competition.
