Lyon have been sanctioned by UEFA after some supporters allegedly directed homophobic chants at the Groupama Stadium during the French club’s 3-2 Europa League victory over Crystal Palace last week.

The governing body has imposed a €20,000 fine on Lyon for discriminatory behaviour. UEFA has also ordered the partial closure of the North Stand, covering sectors 002, 003 and 004, for the club’s next home match in the competition.

That stadium closure has been suspended for a two-year probationary period from the date of the decision. UEFA classified the offence under its regulations covering racist and/or discriminatory conduct.

The chants were reportedly sung in the 42nd minute and targeted Lyon’s local rivals, Saint-Etienne. Lyon’s next Europa League fixture at the Groupama Stadium is scheduled for 26 November against Norwegian side Lillestrom.
