Jo Potter has challenged Crystal Palace Women to improve after their Barclays Women’s Super League campaign suffered a 1-0 home defeat against West Ham.

The match produced few clear opportunities, with West Ham limiting a Palace attack that had scored seven goals across its previous three games in all competitions. Palace were unable to find a response as the visitors claimed the points.

Potter was disappointed with both the result and the way it came about. She felt Palace had controlled long periods of the contest, but believed their overall quality was below the required standard and that mistakes, particularly in key decision-making moments, had proved costly.

The manager also acknowledged that some of the improvements requested from her players were visible, although she felt other aspects of the performance had gone backwards. For Potter, the defeat represented a missed opportunity in a closely contested game.

There is little time for Palace to dwell on the setback. They travel to Southampton in the Players Cup on Wednesday before returning to league action at home against Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea remain unbeaten and arrive after another strong result, meaning Potter expects Palace to be ready for a major test.

Despite the disappointment, Potter remains confident that her players will respond as Palace look to carry their Players Cup form into the midweek fixture and produce a stronger performance in their next league outing.
