Doncaster Rovers defender Conor Grehan has identified former Crystal Palace team-mate Jake O’Brien as an example he hopes to follow in his own career.

The pair played together for Palace’s under-23 side, and Grehan remains encouraged by O’Brien’s rise since their time alongside each other. O’Brien is now playing Premier League football with Everton and recently made three starts for the Republic of Ireland during the latest international break.

Grehan also represented Ireland during the international window, captaining the under-21 side to a surprise win over reigning European champions England in Cork. Ireland finished second in Group D and will meet Finland in a two-legged play-off for a place at the 2027 European Under-21 Championship.

The 22-year-old believes O’Brien’s progress shows what may be possible for players who develop along a similar path. Grehan described his former Palace colleague as a close friend and said O’Brien’s career provides significant encouragement as he continues to establish himself at Doncaster.

Grehan is also benefiting from the experience of fellow Dublin-born defender Neill Byrne at Rovers. The 33-year-old became a permanent Doncaster player in the summer after a successful loan spell and has formed an effective partnership with Grehan, while also supporting him on and off the pitch.

That combination was evident in Doncaster’s derby victory over Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, when Grehan impressed alongside Byrne. The younger defender has highlighted Byrne’s professionalism and the value of observing a senior team-mate who maintains high standards in training and beyond.
