Former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Kevin Miller has died aged 57, with his death announced after he passed away unexpectedly overnight on Tuesday.

Miller joined Palace from Watford in 1997 for a reported £1.5m fee and spent a season in the Premier League with the Eagles. He played in all 38 league matches during the 1997-98 campaign, when Palace were relegated from the top flight.

He remained Palace’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Championship the following season, helping the club finish 14th. Miller left at the end of that campaign to begin a three-year spell with Barnsley.

The goalkeeper had earlier played for Exeter City and Watford, while his career also included spells with Birmingham City, Bristol Rovers, Southampton, Torquay United and Bodmin Town. He finished with 738 appearances in the top four tiers of English football.

Miller later returned to Exeter in a coaching role before moving to Wigan Athletic over the summer to work as their goalkeeping coach and reunite with former Exeter manager Gary Caldwell. Wigan and Exeter both paid tribute to him, with Wigan describing him as a highly respected colleague whose experience, professionalism and personality had made a strong impression in a short period.
