Crystal Palace were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham on Saturday evening after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off in the opening stages of the Premier League contest.
Mateta was initially shown a yellow card by referee Michael Oliver for a lunging challenge on Micky van de Ven, but the decision was reviewed by VAR official Jarred Gillett. Oliver then upgraded the punishment to a red card after seeing that Mateta had caught the Tottenham defender's heel with his studs up.
Tottenham took advantage of their numerical superiority when Archie Gray headed in from a Mohammed Kudus corner. Palace resisted further pressure for much of the match, with Dean Henderson making a strong save to keep out Jan Paul van Hecke's first header from Mateus Fernandes' cross.
Van Hecke eventually doubled Tottenham's lead in the 73rd minute. After Henderson had pushed his initial effort against the crossbar, the defender reacted quickly from the floor to send the rebound over the line. Henderson also saved from Tottenham's Dominic Solanke, while Kudus missed a late opportunity after substitute Luca Williams-Barnett created the opening on his Premier League debut.
