Crystal Palace’s home meeting with Manchester United has been moved to a 19:00 GMT kick-off on Sunday, December 13, prompting a strong reaction from travelling supporters. The fixture is one of the latest Premier League matches to be confirmed and was selected for broadcast by TNT Sports.
The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) has criticised the decision, arguing that a late Sunday start could make the journey home more difficult for away fans. Supporters may face disruption to work, school and family plans, as well as the potential cost of staying overnight.
MUST accepted that Palace’s European commitments provide the reason for the fixture being played on a Sunday, but questioned why the match could not have been scheduled earlier in the day. The group also referred to previous Premier League assurances that the 19:00 Sunday slot would not become a regular part of the fixture calendar.
The supporters’ organisation is now calling on the Premier League, clubs and broadcasters to put stronger protections in place when deciding match dates and kick-off times. It said fans should receive greater consideration because of the role they play in creating the atmosphere valued by broadcasters.
Palace’s match against Manchester United is not the only fixture at Selhurst Park to receive the same unusual Sunday evening slot. The Eagles’ meeting with Arsenal has also been scheduled for a 19:00 kick-off.
