Chelsea could make a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton in January, according to former Eagles striker Fraizer Campbell.
The Blues have held a long-term interest in Wharton and considered a move for the England international during the summer. However, there was an understanding that Palace would not allow the 22-year-old to leave during the recently concluded transfer window.
Chelsea were unable to add a central midfielder over the summer and will now have to wait until at least January before deciding whether to strengthen that area. That could bring Wharton back into focus, with Campbell identifying him as a potential target for a top-six club.
Speaking to Boyle Sports, Campbell said Wharton was among a group of young midfielders who had attracted attention and suggested Chelsea’s need for midfield options could make the Palace player an appealing candidate. He added that the level of interest in Wharton during the summer had been surprising and that January or next summer could provide a clearer indication of Chelsea’s intentions.
For Palace, the message remains significant: while Chelsea’s interest has not yet developed into a confirmed move, Wharton is expected to remain a name linked with the west London club in future transfer windows.
