Cheick Doucoure’s return to Crystal Palace action was the standout moment for fan analyst Ollie Thomas as the club secured a League Cup victory at Fulham. The midfielder had not played since January 2025, making his appearance a significant development for Oliver Glasner’s side.

Doucoure, 26, has endured a difficult period since being named Palace’s player of the year in 2023, his first season at Selhurst Park. His fitness problems have included a ruptured Achilles and a meniscus tear, limiting his availability over the past two campaigns.

Thomas felt Doucoure looked comfortable despite understandably needing time to regain his sharpness. The fan analyst believes the midfielder could provide a blend of qualities that Palace have lacked in the centre of the pitch this season.

Quinten Timber has impressed but can be overly aggressive, according to Thomas, while Adam Wharton offers progression from deep but requires additional physical support. Will Hughes, meanwhile, provides a more disciplined presence further back. Thomas believes Doucoure could combine elements of all three profiles by recovering the ball, progressing possession and protecting the defence.

The possibility of Doucoure forming a partnership with Wharton has therefore increased the sense of anticipation around his comeback. Thomas stressed that the midfielder should not be placed under excessive pressure after his first minutes in almost two years, but suggested that a fully fit Doucoure alongside Wharton could be an ideal combination for Palace during the remainder of the season.
