MATCH SUMMARY

What happened

Crystal Palace ended their meeting with Famalicão level at 0-0 but secured the bonus point by winning the subsequent penalty shootout. Remi Matthews made the decisive intervention, saving Famalicão’s fifth attempt after Palace converted all five of theirs.

Palace’s clearest attacking moments came through Matheus França. He had the ball in the net before the finish was ruled out because of a foul in the build-up, then went close again after David Ozoh’s pressure in midfield helped release him through on goal. França attempted an outside-of-the-boot finish, but the Famalicão goalkeeper blocked it with his foot.

Matthews was also important during open moments in the first half, making a near-post stop from Aranda after the Famalicão forward had already gone close early on. The second half produced less attacking tempo, although Palace were generally difficult to break down despite being stretched on one occasion.

França, Justin Devenny, Rio Cardines, Mofe Jemide and Romain Esse all scored in the shootout. Esse’s conversion kept Palace ahead before Matthews’ low save to his right settled the contest and ended the evening positively.

KEY MOMENTS

The turning points

Palace survived an early warning when Aranda cut inside and sent an effort wide. Matthews then denied the same player at his near post, preserving the scoreline.

The Eagles created their best opportunity when Ozoh’s high pressure helped send França through on goal. The forward could not beat the goalkeeper, while his earlier finish had already been disallowed after a foul in the build-up.

Famalicão threatened from distance when Pedro Santos tried an effort from near halfway, but it fell wide. Koutsias later missed after Palace were stretched and the goal was exposed.

The decisive moment came in the shootout. Palace maintained a perfect record from five attempts, with Matthews saving Famalicão’s fifth penalty to claim the bonus point.

TACTICAL RADAR

How the game was won

The clearest evidence of Palace’s approach came from their pressure in midfield, with Ozoh’s high press directly contributing to França’s one-on-one opportunity. Palace also looked to involve França as a major attacking outlet, with the Brazilian featuring in both of their most notable scoring incidents.

Without the ball, Palace were rarely caught out according to the report, and Matthews’ saves helped them withstand Famalicão’s better openings. There was one warning when the Eagles were stretched for Koutsias’ chance, while the overall attacking tempo declined after the break. The available evidence points to a disciplined defensive display, but not one that produced enough sustained threat to break the deadlock.

STANDOUT PLAYERS

Who impressed

Remi Matthews was Palace’s decisive performer. He made important saves during the match before producing the crucial low stop in the shootout.

Matheus França was the Eagles’ most prominent attacking threat. He found the net only for the goal to be ruled out, then created another clear opportunity after being released through on goal.

David Ozoh also made a notable contribution by applying the pressure that led to França’s best chance.

THE POSITIVES

What Palace did well

Palace remained defensively resilient across a goalless match and responded well to the moments when Famalicão threatened. Matthews provided reliable goalkeeping at key points, while the team’s perfect conversion from five penalties showed composure in the shootout.

The pressure applied by Ozoh produced Palace’s clearest opening, and França continued to offer an attacking threat despite not finding a valid goal.

RADAR CHECK

What needs improving

Palace need to turn promising attacking moments into a goal. França had two significant incidents in the first half, but neither resulted in a completed finish.

The drop in tempo after the interval also limited the contest as an attacking spectacle. Palace were stretched for one Famalicão chance, so maintaining defensive compactness in those moments and generating more sustained pressure after the break would be valuable areas for improvement.
